Why is Bastiat important in the modern era? He showed that the freedom to work and trade is the most universally useful condition for mankind. It is the fulcrum of society and even of human life. Trade is intrinsic to property and to restrict the one is to shake the foundations of the other. Governments around the world are introducing more regulation to deal the current world economic crisis which they perceive as the failure of the free market, when it is in fact the consequence of decades of too much government.
