A Constitution that Deserves Better Mates The Melbourne Dialogues

1st March, 2005 - 1st March, 2005

Location: Institute of Public Affairs
Level 2
410 Collins St, Melbourne

The Australian Constitution is a highly unusual one, as having presided over a century of stable, successful democracy. Yet for many years, the Constitution typically has been derided as an out-of-date, ineffective document, especially by the Australian Left.

Now, traditional conservative defenders of the Constitution seem also to have joined the attack on it, working especially hard to undermine its federal character in favour of centralized power - a decidedly non-conservative, non-liberal position.

In this presentation, Greg Craven will draw upon his recent book, Conversations with the Constitution, to defend the Constitution, and to argue that its critics misunderstand the central challenges of power in modern Australia.
