Policy vs Politics
Letter to the Editor:
To update Dr Peetz's history of the IPA (AFR April 16), of which there are various good studies, the IPA was indeed founded to combat socialism with facts and ideas, a stance history has vindicated.
A remarkable aspect of the IPA's history was its influence in encouraging liberal economic ideas in the most corporatist, even monopolistic, city in Australia.
During the period of the collapse of the non-Labor parties in the mid 1940's, the Victorian IPA did get involved in politics but the Victorian IPA learnt its lesson early and separated ideas and politics.
The NSW IPA failed to do so and faded.
