IPA Is Alive and Well and Proud of its Independence
Letter to the Editor:
It would appear that David J Dick (AFR, Letters, April 14) has been living a sheltered life up there in Canberra. He asks about the provenance of the Institute of Public Affairs and where it gets its money from.
The Institute of Public Affairs is Australia's oldest think tank, founded 55 years ago, and its most distinguishing feature is its independence. It is funded by over 2500 individuals and companies, with no single contribution being greater than 7% of the total. It accepts no donations from political parties or grants from government. One former Labor and one former Liberal politician are IPA fellows.
The IPA received no commission for its recent study on the ABC coverage of the waterfront, nor did it receive any form of funding from any of the protagonists in the waterfront dispute or other interested bodies or individuals.
All our research and methodology is always publicly available and open to challenge. Rather than speculate, Mr Dick, and anyone else, should actually look at what we do and obtain the research free on our website, www.ipa.org.au.
